A Middle Eastern music and bellydance jam! All drummers, dancers and musicians are welcome to participate.
Melissa and Carmine will guide you through playing popular Belly Dance songs of the
Middle East. Open floor dancing all night, all levels of dancers welcome.
This is a community event designed to bring together dancers and musicians inspired
by Middle Eastern music. Experienced or inexperienced: all are welcome! Saturday June 7th 2008 - 8:00pm to 12:00 am

Erika May - Bellydance
This Jalsah will be held at the Your Inner Vagabond. We recommend you arrive at Your Inner Vagabond at 7:30PM for set up and get ready in our 20-30 minute warm up. Erika May will go over basic dance moves for new dancers while the musicians and drummers review riffs and rhythms with Carmine Guida and Melissa Murphey.
The Jalsah is a Middle Eastern music event that invites all musicians (regardless of instrument) and drummers to sit in and play Middle Eastern music for open floor dancing all night. This is a participatory community event designed to bring together dancers and musicians inspired by Middle Eastern music. Experienced....inexperienced...all are welcome! Your Inner Vagabond has yummy coffee and tea and other Middle Eastern delights. However it's BYOB.

Beginner darbuka/doumbek technique with Mark DeFilippo of Ishtar

3PM to 4PM at Your Inner Vagabond
Mark will teach basic darbuka-striking technique and six rhythms common to Middle Eastern music. He will cover how to hold the doumbek, proper posture and technique, as well as how to make the three main darbuka sounds--the "DUM", the "TEK" and the "KA".
Both drummers and dancers will benefit from this class. The drummer will learn to keep a basic rhythm for a bellydancer and for Middle Eastern drum circles. The dancer will learn to recognize basic rhythms common to Middle Eastern bellydance songs and will learn to anticipate beats, tempo and rhythm changes necessary to improvise to live music.

Intermediate/Advanced Darbuka and Bendir (frame drum) technique with Nick Ragheb

4PM to 5PM at Your Inner Vagabond
Nick Ragheb will teach intermediate and advanced darbuka and bendir techniques. Since the 1990’s, Nick has studied Arab style darbuka and bendir in the tradtitional forms of music such as Sufi devotional as well as classical Arab and Turkish compositions. In 2006, Nick moved to Istanbul, Turkey where he spent the following year studying Turkish Romani, Türkü (Turkish Folk), and Sanat (Turkish Classical) music with Turkish master drummer Hakan Kaya and Israeli master drummer Yinon Muallem.

Middle Eastern Music Ensemble for ALL Instruments with Melissa Murphey of Ishtar

5:30PM -7PM at Your Inner Vagabond
Melissa’s workshop is perfect for musicians and percussionists ready to try something different! She will teach the basic structure of several popular Middle Eastern bellydance songs in an ensemble format. Percussionists can learn how specific rhythms fit particular songs and how to change seamlessly between rhythms. Melody musicians can learn popular Middle Eastern melodies and will be given instruction on basic makam theory.
The goal for this workshop is to enable all percussionists and melody musicians to play common songs together. All instruments are welcome, as this music can be played on ANY instrument.
Sheet music, rhythm notation, and sound files can be downloaded in advance at www.dorku.com. Sheet music will be available for sale or to borrow at the workshop.
