You will learn how to play several traditional Middle Eastern rhythms as well as how to switch between them. This workshop is perfect for beginners or experienced drummers who want to brush up or clean up their technique.

D&D DRUMMERS AND DANCERS
Taught by: Carmine and Samira Shuruk
1:45pm to 3:15pm - Cost: $30
This class for both drummers and dancers will teach the basic mechanics and structures of drum solos: The rhythms to choose and how to dance to them, smooth transitions and how to anticipate them, the “rule of 4” and why it’s important for both drummers AND dancers, typical doumbek “riffs," and ways to interpret the sounds on our bodies. This is a multi level class. There will be practice of basic rhythms and transitions, along with practice of basic moves and travel steps. There will also sections providing more challenge such as doumbek rock-star riffs and multiple shimmies, layers and accents.

MIDDLE EASTERN MUSIC AND RHYTHMS FOR ALL INSTRUMENTS

3:30 to 5:00 p.m. - Cost: $15
Melissa’s workshop is perfect for musicians and percussionists ready to try something different! She will teach the basic structure of several popular Middle Eastern bellydance songs in an ensemble format. Percussionists can learn how specific rhythms fit particular songs and how to change seamlessly between rhythms.
